SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Attorney General Mark Shurtleff tells ABC 4 exclusively that he now suspects criminal charges will be filed in connection with "The List" investigation.
Shurtleff's office has been investigating that list of 1,300 suspected illegal immigrants and there are several new developments.
- His office has now finished most of the primary investigation interviews
- He says the investigation may be wrapped up next week or the week after
- Also, ABC 4 is also being told by another source that the U.S. Attorneys office has been given investigation materials.
ABC 4 asked the attorney general,
"Would you say your closer to a decision one way or the other?
To which Mark Shurtleff said,
“Oh, definitely. Every day that passes and we are able to interview more witnesses, we are closer to a decision"
So we pressed the attorney general, asking if he now expects criminal charges to be filed in connection with the list.
He responded by saying,
"I will say that just from the public information that the media has made available, to this point, that I would suspect, from that information, that criminal charges will be filed."
Next, there's Workforce Services employee, Teresa Bassett.
She's reportedly one of the key suspects in the "List” investigation and the state is trying to fire her.
But now, her attorney tells ABC 4 that Bassett is appealing her termination.
The attorney general also confirms that he met this week with the acting U.S. Attorney and that they talked about the investigation.
He also tells ABC 4 that state, federal or combined charges are possible.
