SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Republicans have retained firm control of the Utah Legislature.

Unofficial results show the GOP slightly padded its commanding majorities Tuesday in both the House and Senate.

Incumbents fared well but an exception was state Rep. Christine Watkins, D-Price, who lost to Republican Jerry Anderson.

Rep. Mark Wheatley, D-Murray, won re-election, but his wife, Josie Valdez, lost her Senate bid. The two were trying to become the first husband-wife team elected to the Utah Legislature at the same time.

Before the election, Republicans held a 22-7 edge in the Senate and a 58-17 majority in the House.

Thirteen GOP legislative candidates ran unopposed, while six others faced opposition from only minor-party candidates.
