SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Zion National Park officials say a California woman died Sunday after falling about 1,000 feet from the Angels Landing trail.
National Park Service spokesman Ron Terry says the woman was hiking with family early Sunday when she fell. The fall was reported to St. George police just before 8:30 a.m. by a hiker with a cell phone.
The park service and the Washington County sheriff's office are investigating.
Terry says search and rescue efforts have closed a portion of the West Rim Trail and climbing routes on the north side of Angels Landing.
The woman's name was not immediately released. Terry says she is from the Los Angeles area.
Angels Landing is one of the highest points in the park. The 2.5-mile trail ascends 1,500 feet.
