SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – As part of the ABC News challenge, ABC4 is featuring Utah companies keeping jobs and money in America. If we each spend just $64 this Holiday season on American made products, we can create 200,000 new jobs. Sweet Candy Company keeps their work local, despite the potential savings by going overseas.
Sweet Candy Company said what makes them different is their products and the quality you will find.
Rick Kay is the CEO for the company he said, “We are committed to be an American company based in Utah, we supply quality and we make quality candies.”
Sweet Candy Company has been making their treats in Utah for over one hundred years. Leon Sweet started the company back in the late 1800s and the company has stayed in the family for 120 years.
They make taffy, cinnamon bears, orange sticks; 250 different items made at one of the final remaining general candy makers in the world.
Most candy making is going overseas where there is cheap labor and sugar, but with the cheap comes the possibility for problems.
Candy made overseas, specifically in China, doesn’t necessarily go through the same rigorous safety checks as American made goods. There is also concern with the water being used in production, it could be compromised.
Despite the cheaper possibilities overseas, this Utah Company has made a point and a promise to keep them in Utah keeping jobs local and making sure their product is clean.
Kay said, “We feel a responsibility to our local community and making a quality product. We are committed to it and we think it’s our future.”
