SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 continues our look at Utah companies keeping jobs and money in Utah. A favorite for the outdoor lovers, about 60 years ago a Salt Lake City man came up with the idea for the Springbar tent forever changing the camping world.

The tents are made completely in their Sugarhouse facility. Each piece of canvas, zipper and pole put together by hand.

The tent we see today, started with an idea from Jack Kirkham’s father in 1944. Jack now owns the store offering all your camping needs and the Kirkham Springbar.

Kirkham said, “My father ultimately came up with the product that was better quality and easier to set up more suited for the camping we do in Utah.”

That idea of giving what Utah what Utahns want rules Kirkham’s today. But it’s not just the Beehive state enjoying the Springbar.

Kirkham said, “We have sent tents to Asia, Australia, England and places like that.”

While Kirkham’s is the only place you can get the Springbar, their website fills the gap.

Kirkham said, “It’s such a high quality tent and a lot of cost in the labor, we find selling the tent direct makes it reasonably affordable.”

When it comes to where you spend your money, Kirkham’s hopes you will treat your local Utah companies well.

Kirkham said, “It adds distinction and interest to the whole mix of retailing, I think its important to have people like us.”

The Springbar tent is an investment that will pay for it self in five years, or eight Coleman tents. They at extremely easy to set up, will take on just about any kind of weather, and they will last your lifetime. I feel like when you do the math, these tents are very inexpensive. Check out their high winds video on Youtube, it's awesome.

May be a little costly (WORTH IT), but they hold up in ALL weather. They can take very high winds and they're waterproof. I've used them in group camping situations and for the most part, if you're in anything but a Springbar people are getting wet or the other tents can't take the winds. We've had them in our family for 50+/- years. Wouldn't have anything else.

I grew up 35+ years ago in these tents. My Dad is a die hard at 76 still packs them around. I just took a look thinking about getting one for my family. WOW was I shocked at the price. I get that they sell direct to keep price down. But the pricing is ridiculous. I will buy a new 8 man tent each year for the next 5 years and still not reach the cost of a family tent. Can't wait to ask my Dad how he afforded it. We were not well off. Not buying local on this one.

I just looked at Kirkham's online store. Those are some good-looking tents. I'm not familiar with anyone else fully making tents in the US. It's good to know where to go. --Sherry http://www.ohsayusa.com
