Salt Lake City, UT (ABC4 News) - Utah Food Bank and partner agencies across the state are partnering with the Boy Scouts of America to help fight hunger in Utah during the 27th annual Scouting for Food drive scheduled for Saturday, March 23.
The food drive will stock Utah Food Bank shelves and emergency food pantries statewide.
"The Scouting for Food Drive comes at a critical time when shelves at many local pantries and Utah Food Bank are beginning to thin following the holiday season," said Ginette Bott, Utah Food Bank chief marketing officer. "We appreciate the support given by families who donate to their local pantries along with the Boy Scouts of America, Siegfried and Jensen and the Utah National Guard who give time and resources to support those within their own communities who need help."
Residents are encouraged to leave food donations on their doorstep by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Local Boy Scouts will go door to door collecting the donations and will deliver them to the Utah Food Bank. You can also drop off donations at the nearest Harmons' Grocery Store or directly to Utah Food Bank (located at 3150 S. 900 W., Salt Lake City).
Donated food should be commercially packaged and non-perishable items, including beef stew, chili, peanut butter, boxed meals, canned meats and canned fruits and vegetables. Local food banks are also in need of products low in sodium, sugar and corn syrup.
"The food donations received from our community will be used to help our neighbors and friends," said Bott. "Families who go without food look a lot like you and me. They are our neighbors, co-workers and friends, and they need our help."
Food insecurity is higher in Utah than in most states throughout the country, and roughly one child in Utah out of five is at risk of missing a meal. The Scouting for Food drive is an initiative that benefits Utah's statewide food assistance network, including 129 emergency food pantries, regional food banks and community partners.
