SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement through their newsroom blog on Thursday, outlining their practice of owning an operating for-profit businesses.

The statement comes after a lengthy article published in Bloomberg Businessweek magazine that had an accompanying cover picture that depicts John the Baptist telling the prophet Joseph Smith and early church leader Oliver Cowdery to "build a mall," among other business advice, to which Smith responds, "Hallelujiah!"

The cover image was taken from a 1898 lithograph of “The Youthful Prophet, Joseph Smith, Jr., and Oliver Cowdery, Receiving the Aaronic Priesthood Under the Hands of John the Baptist.

The cover sparked controversy, both inside and outside the church.

Here is a link to the church's statement.

Far more helpful than releasing a statement on its finances would be for the LDS church to release its financial reports. What are they hiding from even their own members?

Go Bloomberg!!! You did an Awesome job covering this story! Congratulations to Hawaii who realized the true nature of the business and charges LDS taxes on the "Polynesian Cultural Center" as a FOR-PROFIT business! When are the rest of the states and Federal Government going to Wake up and make LDS pay taxes on all earnings from their Multi-Biillion $ Business ventures and stop chasing the little Mom & Pop shops, who are barely getting by, then right out of business! SHAME on LDS,Catholics and any of the rest of these groups dripping in Gold & Wealth, saying it's all in the name of JESUS, while people are homeless & starving all around them!! Very Sincerely, Kimberly
