SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement through their newsroom blog on Thursday, outlining their practice of owning an operating for-profit businesses.
The statement comes after a lengthy article published in
Bloomberg Businessweek magazine that had an accompanying cover picture that depicts John the Baptist telling the prophet Joseph Smith and early church leader Oliver Cowdery to "build a mall," among other business advice, to which Smith responds, "Hallelujiah!"
The cover image was taken from a 1898 lithograph of “The Youthful Prophet, Joseph Smith, Jr., and Oliver Cowdery, Receiving the Aaronic Priesthood Under the Hands of John the Baptist.
The cover sparked controversy, both inside and outside the church.
