SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Starting tomorrow all of the grocery stores in downtown Salt Lake City will have some extra competition when the newest Harmons opens up at City Creek Center. However, keep in mind that competition is what keeps these stores moving forward.
The grocery business has always been competitive and it will continue to be that way in downtown SLC which is why new stores like Harmons must find ways to stand out from its competitors.
"What we're going to bring is something very unique and frankly one of our biggest assets is our people," said Bob Harmon, Harmons' VP for the customer.
"We know we're not going to open up and be overwhelmed," said Randy Harmon, VP of consumer affairs for Harmons. "People are going to come check us out."
The question some people are asking is with so many supermarkets in downtown Salt Lake, are there enough consumers to support them all?
"We think there will be," said Marty Carpenter, Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Spokesperson. "That comes with the City Creek Center opening and not just the retail space but the residential space as well."
People in the community has supported the other grocery stores and will continue to do that. Although, believe it or not, the folks we talked to want to see more grocery stores in the area.
"I'm very excited because we don't have any place to eat around here," said Shauna Parcell of American Fork. "This will be good."
"I don't think there's enough right close," said Nancy Hansen of Cedar Hills. "I have a daughter at the U and even she's pretty excited."
As for when the next Harmons will open up, well, you'll have to wait awhile. The Harmon brothers tell ABC4 that they're going to take a breather after opening three stores within the last 12 months.
