Statistically, it is projected only 3% of the population set goals. It is also rumored these 3% are more financially successful than the other 97% combined! I have yet to discover a reliable source or study that documents this as fact. However, if you are searching for positive results and truly looking to live a more abundant and meaningful life, goals will provide you with the direction you need.
So, if goals are so vital for your success, then why do some people struggle with creating and attaining them? From my experience, the answer to this question can be one of four reasons.
- FEAR – Fear is by far one of the greatest of all inhibitors. People fear success, failure, the unknown, fame, love and commitment. Fear destroys your dreams and will stop you from making the changes required to move in a positive direction. What you should fear is “not” making the healthy changes required to better your circumstances. It is time to get outside your comfort zone! Decide today to embrace change by making a commitment to set and attain your goals.
- LACK OF KNOWLEDGE – If it is the lack of knowledge that is holding you back from accomplishing your goals and objectives, then make it a priority to seek education. Replace your doubts with knowledge. This will give you the ability to move forward with confidence and provide you with a determination to succeed.
- NEGATIVE SELF-TALK – Stop yourself from stepping into this pit of despair. The words “I can’t”, “I’m not capable”, and “I’m not able to” need to be removed from your vocabulary. Do NOT be your worse self critic. You are responsible for the outcome of your future! Be determined to take control of your life by setting goals no matter how far out of reach they might initially appear.
- PAST FAILURE – Many people are apprehensive about goal setting due to past failure. You have to recognize every day as an opportunity to recreate your life. You will never evolve into the person you desire to become if you do not take the steps required to get you there. One of my favorite quotes is by Thomas Edison “I failed my way to success” This quote provides a wonderful and inspired message. True failure only occurs when you give up on your dreams. Recommit and be determined to plan for your future!
Still not motivated? Then let us explore some of the reasons you should have goals. First, goals enable you to prioritize your time and focus on the things that are most important. Working toward your goals invites personal and professional growth. They also provide meaning and purpose to your life and open up the realm of unlimited possibility. Once obtained, they will give you a sense of greater self worth and increase your confidence level.
Now that you have a better understanding of the many wonderful benefits of goal creation and attainment, you can use my simple 8 step process to create and accomplish your objectives.
- Create a list of everything you would like to experience and accomplish. You can set goals for the 5 main areas of your life including: Spirituality, Relationships, Health, Money/Business and Charity.
- Your goals and dreams must be clearly defined. The more detailed, the better. Be specific!
- Goals must include all the steps required for achievement.
- They must be measurable.
- You must include a realistic timetable for accomplishment.
- Keep them visible and review the list several times a week. (Out of site/out of mind)
