OGDEN (ABC 4 News) - Four Ogden teens went on a road trip over Memorial Day Weekend to Venice Beach, California. You might say they were on a treasure hunt. It was a practical joke that is on its way to going viral on YouTube.
The video begins in their car somewhere on the road, "Hey, we're on our way to California right now. We have a trunk -- a fake treasure chest -- strapped to the top of this Chevy Sonic."
They go on to explain that the fake treasure chest will be filled with an equally fake treasure, chocolate coins covers with gold foil.
On the beach in the dead of the night, the teens dug a 6-7 foot deep hole and set their treasure trap.
The next day, a couple of them set out with a metal detector. At first, the Memorial Day crowd pays them little attention. But as they dig, people start to gather until, when the shovels hit the top of the chest, the ring of bystanders around the hole is three to five people deep.
They toy with the crowd peaking inside the chest. The crowd is now primed. They're chanting, "Open it. Open it. Open it."
Then, along comes the long arm of the Venice Beach law, the lifeguard, who almost ruins the prank. She tells them, "I need you guys to get out ... Just get out of the hole because we don't know what's in there."
The video skips over the details of how they convinced the lifeguard that it was okay, but she allowed them to continue with the "grand" opening.
The crowd roared it's approval as the "treasure" was revealed and roared even louder when some started yelling, "It's chocolate!"
The
buried treasure prank video was posted on YouTube on Tuesday. A day later, it had more than 79,000 views.
