COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Forecasters are predicting a high avalanche threat for the weekend due the expected amounts of fresh snow on the mountains.
The weak snow on the ground may not be able withstand weight from heavier layers of snow causing avalanche, according to predictors from the Utah Avalanche Center.
“The most common mistake people make is not knowing the conditions before they head out,” Utah Avalanche Center spokesman Brett Kobernick said.
If you are headed to the backcountry, be prepared with a rescue kit.
The UAC has recorded about 50 avalanches since the start of the season, half of which have been prompted by people.
“Fight, swim or try to grab onto a branch,” Kobernick added. “Do anything you can to get out of the path of moving snow.”
Experts recommend enrolling in an avalanche safety course for added precaution. Most ski resort areas in Utah offer classes.
