SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert says Utah will maintain its health insurance exchange as he awaits answers from the federal government related to President Barack Obama's health care law.

Herbert said in a letter to the federal government Monday that he appreciated a deadline extension for states to decide how they will handle the new law. But he says there are still too many unanswered questions for Utah to determine what it will do next.

The federal government has given states until Dec. 14 to determine what role they will play in building new health insurance markets through which the uninsured can get coverage starting in 2014.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney had vowed to dismantle the law if elected. GOP governors who opposed it have been left scrambling since his loss.
