PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News)- A BYU professor says you're going to live longer thanks to cleaner air. That may be hard to believe when you look out your window and see that inversion that is hanging around the Salt Lake Valley.

BYU epidemiologist Arden Pope says our air in this country is better than it was 20 years ago. He's the lead author on a study that he conducted with the Harvard School of Public Health. He says despite the inversion, which he calls temporary, Americans are living five more months because of cleaner air. Arden says, “Our public policy effort to improve our air quality seems to be paying off."

Arden says one reason for the cleaner air is better emission standards for cars, truck, and buses. The study will be in the January 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"A BYU professor says you're going to live longer thanks to cleaner air." -- And we need a professor to tell us the obvious and give us tips on common sense..because... why exactly? lol As for the comments made on the air being worse 20 years ago--not in this state it wasn't. BS. I've lived in utah most of my life, and I've never seen the air this bad until the last 5 years ago or so. You never heard this on the tv at all or talked about like this. The air may be better around the rest of the country as a whole, but not in this state! And btw, if you want to live longer, move to some place where it actually rains..like the northwest or even better yet, florida. That's right--florida has better air quality than the NW and way better than here.

Nice going! Let's all congratulate ourselves and drive even more in bigger vehicles. Seriously, what matters is that the air quality exceeds healthy standards. I don't particularly care for the "fact" that the air was worse 20 years ago. What matters is bad air days now. In my opinion one exceedence is one too many. Here is a thought: Imagine how much longer we would live if the air quality was always acceptable!

Super rad story glad to hear you talk about how good the air is on such a SMOG POLLUTED nasty dirty air filled day. It was honestly refreshing to hear all that good news I can actually breathe easier right now! Fun fact I heard today: The American Lung Association says: Running in a polluted urban area for 30 minutes is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
