SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – The cold of the winter months might be painful, but doctors now say the problem may be more real than we thought. Cold temperatures can cause allergic reactions.

For most in Utah the cold of winter is wanted, but for others it could be deadly.

Dr. Gerald Gleich from the University of Utah told ABC4, “People can die from cold urticaria.”

That’s the “real” term for an allergy to the cold.

A new study from the New England Journal of Medicine is bringing attention to the allergy and Dr. Gleich says cold urticaria is more common than we might think.

Dr. Gleich said, “It's real and a classical allergic response.”

If you want to know if you have a problem, get an ice cube and put it on your arm for a few minutes if you develop a rash, you might have a problem.
