SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - ABC 4 broke the big news...
Utah voters may get a chance to vote on liquor privatization.
In fact, an effort to put booze on the ballot is now underway.
ABC 4 News is being told a ballot privatization meeting was held at the end of November at a Park City restaurant.
Reportedly attending were bar owners, restaurant owners, a distiller and representatives from the Park City Visitors Bureau and the Utah Hospitality Association.
Also in attendance was an out-of-state political consultant, one said to be experienced with ballot initiative measures.
ABC 4 has obtained an email written after that privatization meeting.
It contains hints about why this group wants to put booze on the ballot and how it may do it.
The email states,
"Given the recent DABC scandals, the Utah Hospitality Association lawsuit and the overall political climate of the state, the timing seems ripe to pursue this option."
ABC 4 is being told this group may try to put the liquor issue on the 2012 ballot and that the initiative should address "full privatization."
Finally, ABC 4 News is also being told that there is some concern about this within the LDS Church.
Specifically, that what happened in Washington State might happen here.
Washington State voters recently approved a ballot measure which privatized liquor sales there.
Now, the last time there was a big alcohol issue on the ballot in the 1960's, Church opposition helped defeat it.
