There were a lot of good films and a few great ones in 2011. I struggled with my choice for best picture, but in the end, I had to go with War Horse for its powerful imagery and emotional finish. A close second was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with Rooney Mara's incredible performance. Other films worthy of high honors include The Artist, a fabulous ode to silent films and changing technology and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a gut-wrenching tale of redemption set against a 9-11 background. Super 8 proved J.J Abrams can recapture some of Spielberg's early magic, while Hugo proved Scorcese can do more than direct crime dramas. I also included Senna, the heart-pounding documentary about the late Brazilian racing legend and 13 Assassins, a great samurai epic. 50/50's understated, yet poignant look at the reality of cancer was another treat, while Moneyball proved that a movie about an innovative algebraic formula can be more than a film about baseball.

6.Hugo
7.13 Assassins

Just like my list of best films, my list of worst films is full of some awful movies, and some exceptionally horrible movies. I make this list with the caveat that I have yet to see New Year's Eve or Jack and Jill (both of which I hear are worthy of great disdain), but I suffered through enough bad movies in the past year to make a coherent tribute to bad cinema. At the top of my list is Hop, a live-action film mixed with animated characters having something to do with the Easter Bunny (voiced by Russel Brand). If a scene in which the bunny poops jelly beans isn't enough to make you gag, the rest of this cinematic atrocity should. Equally bad was Your Highness and Bad Teacher, two films that successfully extolled the warrants of being bad. The third Transformers installment proved that Michael Bay must be stopped from making any more movies before he creates a cinematic block hole. Columbiana should have been listed as a comedy, because it was unintentionally funny. Other films that were actually billed as comedies but were much less funny were Mr. Popper's penguins, The Change Up and Something Borrowed. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of the year goes to The Hangover Part II, which was the exact same story as its predecessor, only more vulgar. Rounding out the bottom of the list is the latest in the so-called Twilight "Saga," which proved you can make a bad thing worse by splitting it into two movies. Heaven help us all when the final Twilight movie buttons up the series in 2012.

1.Hop
2.Your Highness
3.Bad Teacher
4.Transformers: Dark of the Moon
5.Mr. Popper's Penguins
6.Colombiana
7.Something Borrowed
8.The Hangover Part II
9.The Change Up
10. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Dishonorable Mention: Happy Feet Two, What's Your Number?, Dolphin Tale, In Time.
