Best 'sleeper' movie I've seen in years! The modern day 'reviewers' likely had trouble grasping the plot as it is not 'formula'. I found it to be one of the best Science Fiction movies in years! I'm betting Lucas read Edgar Rice Burroughs pulp when we was a kid.

Dan indicates that John Carter "... discovers that he has super powers due to some sort of human atmospheric/biological phenomenon" in actuality, his inability to walk after arriving on Mars and amazing ability to jump were due to the fact that Mars has a gravity that is about .38 that of Earth (thus if he weighed 175 pounds on Earth, he would only weigh about 66 pounds on Mars). Interestingly, the movie also portrays the native Tharks as very tall and thin which is something one would expect on a lighter planet. Overall, I enjoyed the book 20 years ago and greatly enjoyed the movie.

I totally agree Cheryl! The movie is epic! One thing you failed to mention is that most of the movie was filmed in Southern Utah, just east of Zion National Park, Lake Powell and Big Water. Get ready there are 11 more books:)

Although some will bleat that "Carter" looks too much like "Star Wars". It was the Barsoom series that was the inspiration for "Star Wars", and that series could be called a tribue to the genius of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
