SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A five block radius in Salt Lake City is home to one of the highest concentrations of registered sex offenders in Utah.

From South Temple Blvd. on the north to 400 South, from 400 East to 900 East holds 39 registered sex offenders in this very small section of the city.  Six of them live in just one apartment building.

Law enforcement authorities have no explanation why this one area has such a high concentration.

And just on the other side of South Temple, ten square blocks house zero sex offenders.

One resident doesn't find these Crimetracker reports as a surprise.  "I think they're here due to the location of the transportation and then all the non-conforming medical programs that are allowed to be housed in this area," said 30-year-old Melinda Main.

Police say residents need to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings and their neighbors.  But they also say this precinct has no more crime than any other.

These are the facts, not just in Utah, in this Country... check the internet and news elsewhere... its everywhere. Sex Offenders have extreme difficulty finding places that will rent to them for two reasons; The background checks that exclude them and keep them from finding employment making them burdens on families and society instead of independent. And restrictions upon where they can live in proximity to parks and schools. All sex offenders are labeled and grouped together. Whether Ted Bundy and/or a true predator, or a date rape, or a 18 year old dating a 17 year old. But the Stigma of the label "sex offender" makes them the modern day Lepers without any information about what they truly did or if they have been treated, etc. There is no statute of limitations anymore either and the laws continue to add more and more onto the backs of sex offenders. multiple registrations, paying to be "registered" long after the crime or any supervision. Requirements to renew drivers licenses at the offenders expense every year, tracking of vehicles, education, work, etc. It goes on and on...all violations of the "ex post facto" laws, but NO ONE SPEAKS UP FOR...LEPEROUS SEX OFFENDERS, THEY ARE FILTH. The fact is that many ARE dangerous. MORE are labelled though their crimes are fairly insignificant. Many were wrongly convicted. And many others did their crimes 10, 15 or 20 years ago but due to issues in the system are still required to register... This is a witch hunt and really sad. It used to be that objective reporting actually looked at both sides of an issue and ATTEMPTED to find out what the real story was. And this is difficult because if a sex offender speaks out, he is exposed, ridiculed, harassed, ostracized even more and probably fired from any meager job he/she has been lucky enough to find. Thus, the sex offender is considered to be the lowest of the low and prejudiced in every way possible. Its time to look at both sides and find the REAL TRUTH

no elevated crime of any kind, what is the story about? is this a desperate attempt to fill in space at the news desk?

As usual, our great system can't seem to separate the wheat from the rat doodoo. Many of those registered just had underage girlfriends after they turned 18. And they're on the same registry, and in many ways treated the same, as genuine perverts and predators who are demented and really hurt people. So where are the registries for robbers, muggers, drug dealers, embezzlers, wife beaters, and even murderers? Oh, I guess we don't need to be warned about them, because they're so harmless. What a screwed-up mess of a system--yet people continue to tolerate it and the politicians that formulate and control it. Amazing.

Over 1% of the male population in Salt Lake City is registered as a sex offender, and rising. Almost none of them have ever raped a random child. 1 in 3 young men have been arrested, and as many as 80% of them will be arrested or imprisoned at some point in their lives. They're just boys, not criminals. At the same time, boys are being excluded from education, housing, and employment at similar rates. Oh, yeah, and the economy is collapsing.
