I have had it with people misusing the phrase, “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” I’m a long time resident of the Lone Star State. I’ve lived in Houston, and three other Texas cities including Waco. Waco is considered the Heart of Texas. As a matter fact, hundreds of businesses and organizations there are called HOT, short for Heart of Texas.
There’s the HOT Speedway, HOT Trikers, HOT Golf Inc., and HOT Soccer Club just to name a few. In addition, I covered many basketball games back in the day at the HOT Coliseum. Here’s one of my favorites, HOTROC stands for the Heart of Texas Rocket Club.
Recently I saw a network television show, and the announcer was describing what was going on in Dallas. He said a zillion times, “Deep in the Heart of Texas,”. I just started laughing after I heard that.
Dallas is considered North Texas, San Antonio is in South Texas. Brady, Texas is the geographical center of the state. It’s about 130 miles NW of Austin. However, make no mistake about it; the Heart of Texas is Waco. It’s like every chance they get those TV types try to say that all 254 Texas counties are, “Deep in the Heart.”
There, now I feel better. Bet you didn’t know Waco is also the home of Dr. Pepper, and it’s the birthplace of comedian and actor Steve Martin.
