I didn't grow up in the BYU-Utah rivalry, and I admit when I moved here back in 2005, I knew very little about it. I have no allegiances to either school, but I've had the great fortune of witnessing in person some of the greatest games this classic battle has had to offer.
My first experience came in 2005, when some guy named Brett Ratliff, making his first career start, led the Utes to an overtime win in Provo no less over the favored Cougars. The next year in Salt Lake City produced the best finish in rivalry history. I was in the back of the end zone when John Beck scrambled around for what seemed like two hours when he finally found Jonny Harline with no time left on the clock to win the game. I couldn't believe it -- I was 2 for 2.
The 2007 game was kind of boring until the final few minutes. Darrell Mack scored to give the Utes a 10-9 lead. Then one of the most famous plays in rivalry history happened. Pinned back deep in their own territory, facing 4th and 18, Max Hall launched it up for Austin Collie for a 49-yard gain. A few plays later, Harvey Unga scored to give the Cougars the victory. I was astounded. Three games, and three classic finishes.
Last year's game turned into a blowout in the second half, with Max Hall throwing five interceptions. But just to see the Utes complete a perfect regular season and earn a BCS bowl game berth made it a truly memorable win.
So I've been to four BYU-Utah games, and I've come away with four great memories. People always ask me who I'm rooting for, and I always tell them that I just want to see a great game. So far, I haven't been disappointed.
