SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) –Too much sodium in a person’s diet can lead to heart disease and stroke, but many people are surprised about the number one contributor to the average diet.
We put it to the test in the Good Things Utah kitchen where women were asked to arrange the top ten sodium contributors to the American diet. While most identified bread as the number on culprit most were surprised by the list compiled by the Centers for Disease Control.
The CDC reports 40% of the sodium comes from the following ten foods and its list shapes up like this: breads and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, fresh and processed poultry, soups, sandwiches, cheese, pasta dishes, meat dishes, and snacks.
The average American eats 3,300 milligrams of sodium a day. The U.S. guideline is 2,300 mg. The CDC also report 90% of Americans are eating too much.
