SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Church congregations of all denominations were read a letter Sunday from the pulpit. It's a plea for help from the Utah Food Bank.
The need for food assistance has increased by 35-percent in the past year. The shelves at the Salt Lake warehouse are far from bare, but the food there has already spoken for in the next three weeks and Utah Food Bank marketing director, Ginett Bott says there's not much coming to replace it. “When a family goes to a pantry, perhaps in a rural areas, expecting food, or help, and there is nothing there for them to take home, the crisis is happening at the family level”
Food Bank supplies are down 30 percent. It is only able to send out about a third of what local pantries are asking for. The Utah Food Bank hopes to re-stock shelves with a food drive this Saturday September 24th. Anyone who can help is asked to drop off non-perishable food items at their local Wal-Mart store.
