PROVO, Utah (AP) - The Provo School District's personnel director is being named chief administrator after the superintendent announced he'd be stepping down immediately.

The district's board named Bob Gentry interim superintendent on Wednesday, a day after superintendent Randy Merrill unexpectedly announced he was leaving. Merrill will stay with the district as a consultant through the end of his contract June 30.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports Merrill had come under fire for investigating the fundraising efforts of Timpview High School head football coach Louis Wong. Some feared Wong would be fired and called for Merrill's resignation.

Merrill has served as superintendent for 10 years and says the primary reason he's stepping down to pursue other opportunities.

The district is planning a nationwide search for a permanent replacement.
