PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A boarding school aimed at helping troubled youth is changing the lives of teens across the country.
Discovery Academy is a therapeutic boarding school located in Provo, Utah. It serves students ages 13 to 17 that have behavioral or emotional problems.
Executive Director Brent Hall said many of the teens have experienced some form of harassment from others.
“They become bullies not because they feel powerful but because they feel vulnerable,” Hall said.
The Ohio student who opened fire on classmates Monday was believed to be the victim of bullying. One student died and three others were critically wounded.
Hall said he wished the student would have received help before the incident happened, but added that determining who will act out is difficult.
He explained the rehabilitation at Discovery allows students to establish a connection with members of his or her family and community. The academy prepares students for post-high school educational opportunities using the boarding school model.
