SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Three Utah warehouses took on a whole new flavor Saturday. They were stacked to the ceiling with Thin Mints, Somoas, and Tagalongs, just to name a few of the varieties of Girl Scout cookies now headed to Utah doorsteps.
Girl Scout Troop Leaders were grabbing millions of cookies Saturday, 1,641,648 cookies to be exact. It was distribution day. They loaded boxes and boxes of cookies into cars, trucks, and even U-Hauls.
The biggest sellers in Utah are still Thin Mints and Somoas. Marion Neversummer is one of hundreds of Troop Leaders who filled their Girls Scouts’ orders. Even she was stunned by the boxes of cookies stacked to the ceiling. "It’s a lot of Thin Mints, actually that wall of Somoas over there, that was shocking at first. I would really like to have this in my house year round."
Behind each box in the warehouse is a Girl Scout sale.” It’s really impressive they do such an amazing job selling cookies, and this is evidence of that, all of these cookies in this warehouse here."
Assistant Troop Leader, Liz Patterson, says the girls learn a lot in the process of selling the cookies that are so popular in Utah. "This teaches them a lot about entrepreneurship, goal setting money management; it's a great program for the girls."
The money raised by the hardworking Girl Scouts will pay off for the rest of the year. Each box is $3.50. Two dollars of that goes back to the troop. Patterson says good sales equates to great opportunities. "These cookies pay for everything the troop does so from January, to now March, this will pay for everything." That includes camp, service projects, travel, and other activities.
If you have already ordered cookies, they will be delivered in the next few weeks. If you haven't, but still want to, look for the cookie booths at your local grocery store in the coming month.
