SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Sunday would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's 83rd Birthday. Events began Sunday and will continue through the holiday.
Members of the Jewish Kol Ami congregation honored the civil rights leader Sunday with service projects to benefit the homeless, abused and neglected children, those who are ill, and those who are hungry.
Pam Silberman, a volunteer says Dr. King’s message is very much in line with Jewish beliefs. "The message of Dr. King is that we all have a responsibility to make the world a better place and overcome discrimination and challenges in our community."
She says Mitzvah Day, which means day of service, is an appropriate way to honor the civil rights leader.
There are several events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior statewide on Monday. A human rights rally is scheduled for 2pm at East High School at 840 South 1300 East it will be immediately followed by a 1.3 mile march and parade leading to Kingsbury Hall at the University of Utah.
Another Freedom March starts at 9:00 am in Ogden. It begins with a breakfast at 222 28th Street in Ogden, followed by the march. Participants will end the event with community service.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at Murray High School starts at 7pm Monday night. It’s a free concert featuring poetry, music and dance.
In Provo there's a candlelight walk and commemorative program that begins at 5:30 starting at the BYU Bell Tower and ending at the Wilkinson Center Ballroom at Brigham Young University.
