SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - You probably got a text message on your phone late Sunday night telling you about an AMBER Alert for a 7 year old girl. The message looks urgent, but it's really a big hoax.
Monday morning both emergency dispatchers and the Bureau of Criminal Identification said they never sent out an AMBER Alert.
Some people received the text message Sunday night just before 11 o'clock. It looks like a forwarded message. It said:
“FWD: FWD: FW: AMBER ALERT A 7 yr old girl was taken by a man driving a newer silver truck. The license plate reads 72b381please please pass on.”
But don't believe it, it's fake.
You can get AMBER Alert text messages on your phone if you sign up for them, but if it's real it won't be the only place you'll see it.
You'd hear it on the radio; see it on TV, message boards on the freeway, and on
amberalert.gov.
