Roy, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A new warning was released Sunday about a hand sanitizer after the U.S. Marshalls raided a chemical manufacturer in Roy.
The Marshalls went into Clarcon biological chemical laboratory and took all of their sanitizer products saying they are not safe.
The FDA said they contain harmful bacteria that can cause infections. We were unable to reach Clarcon officials for comment, but we know this is not the first time the company has come under fire.
“I'm not a criminal, I'm just trying to make a good health product,” Onar Bonada, the inventor of the sanitizer said.
Clarcon officials were also on the defense back in June and a month before then, FDA inspectors uncovered high levels of bacteria in samples from skin sanitizers.
Clarcon's president Bill Markham said he ordered a voluntary recall, destroying nearly a million dollars worth of lotion, but the FDA said the company should have destroyed more products. The feds also said Clarcon did not meet FDA good practice standards. So, the government sent federal marshals to raid the lab this weekend and seized products. Examples of some seized products include mom nature sanitizer, antimicrobial hand sanitizer, derma barrier and citrushield. Onar Bonada said he invented that lotion and actually drank it in front of our cameras back in June to prove it's safe.
Since 2007, Clarcon has produced and distributed more than 800,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and lotion. The FDA said consumers should throw the products away.
An FDA spokesperson said Sunday afternoon that the government is confident it has taken the appropriate action, but the question that remains unanswered is will this company ever be able to make hand sanitizers again or do they get a second chance if they clean up their act? We are continuing to try and make contact with Clarcon for an answer.
