PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A senior at BYU who is studying to be a doctor finds himself in the middle of the heated debate over same sex marriage and California's proposition 8. It is all because of a letter he wrote to the editor of the campus newspaper -- The Daily Universe.

The way Cary Crall tells the story, his letter was first rejected, then turned into a full blown "guest" editorial, published, and then quickly removed from the newspaper's website and labeled, "offensive."

Crall wrote that Mormons ought to be honest about the real reasons they put so much time, money and effort into passage of prop 8. After reading the decision of the federal judge in the prop 8 case, he concluded there is little rational basis for many of the arguments for prop 8. So if such arguments were not the real reasons for their support, then what? "The real reason," he wrote, "is that a man who most of us believe is a prophet of God told us to support the amendment."

"If the real reason for supporting the amendment is a privately held religious opinion and belief in a prophet -- that a prophet is telling us to do it -- then we need to be honest about that and take the consequences," Crall told me. "I think the Mormon community owes that kind of introspection to the rest of the world for our actions in proposition 8."

Crall now finds himself defending not only his opinion, but also his faith. "I won't admit that my stand is against the LDS Church," he said. "My stance is that if you're choosing to follow the prophet... be honest about that."

On the decision to yank Crall's article from the online edition of The Daily Universe, Faculty Advisor Edward Carter wrote, "The Daily Universe made an independent decision to remove the student viewpoint titled "Defending Proposition 8" after being alerted by various readers that the content of the editorial was offensive."

Crall shot back, "I find that ridiculous." Crall contends that just because people choose to be "offended" by an opinion is not a valid reason to quash that opinion.

Several students on campus told me they had not read Crall's editorial. One even said he was aware only of the controversy, but not the content.

Since the article was pulled, Crall said he's been flooded with emails and requests for interviews.

Somehow the real disturbing issue in this story has been pushed to the background. I mean, who in their right mind actually considers BYU's "Daily Universe" to be a real newspaper? I sure dont. I gave up hope a long time ago that reading that "newspaper" was worth any of my time at all, even if it was only during my walk from the library to the JFSB. Example: three out of six letters to the editor in one paper last week were concerning student opinions on how long young women's shorts should be. Obviously someone thought it was important, but hardly what i would call news or current events. What if the school "newspaper" decided to provide some actual content about things which affect the lives of the students beyond whether or not a minority of the females on campus wear shorts down to their knees or not? Imagine a provo where the student/school newspaper did some kind of real reporting; articles on police action (above and beyond the ridiculous, though often amusing, 'police beat'), local political issues, or how about a running editorial on the injustice/racketeering inherent in the "approved housing" boundaries and the resulting over-priced and often lack-luster student housing "market"? That would be worthwhile.

"This is a very good article. Let's read it together." Come on, Hunsaker, let's at least attempt to pretend we're objective and not trying to sway the sources to give us the quotes we want. This is why I prefer newspapers...

I stand corrected. This was first quoted by Alexander Hamilton The quote is actually "Those Who Stand For Nothing, Fall For Anything" I am glad that you told me I was so wrong in my beliefs. I see the light now that everything I ever knew was wrong and everything you ever knew was right.

Seriously boatcar94, are you trying to quote Hinckley over something he either never said or he blatantly plagiarized? The proper credit goes to Malcom X. And how do you know "most" goes to charity? Have you seen the Church documentation yourself about where and how the money is spent, or are you just making an assumption because you truly have no idea?

About your comment...ahem..."Legalize Pot"? was it? Taxes you have to pay and Tithing you voluntarily donate...most of which goes to charity.

I am a personal friend of the author and I agree with his views 100%. I am LDS, but I don't believe that you should base your political views on the fact that the prophet said to vote this way. I have gay friends and I look forward to the day that they marry someone they love. I will be sitting there in the front row supporting them.

I agree that Prop 8 would not have had nearly the support without the church's unofficial backing. Nonetheless, to state that there is no logical basis for outlawing gay marriage is offensive to all the members who did study the issue out, analyze it, and draw conclusions. To make generalizations about the church members as a whole is ignorant and subject to a very high level of scrutiny. I would absolutely love to debate against this aspiring doctor.

@alan101..."Family is a group of people or animals (many species form the equivalent of a human family wherein the adults care for the young) affiliated by consanguinity, affinity or co-residence." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family) Seems like they are a prime example of a family. I guess what you meant was, "Gay marriage = anti-procreation pure and simple", right? That makes more sense and it's true. They probably wouldn't be having children with their same-sex partner since the birds and bees say that's not possible. Do you work for Bayer Pharmaceuticals or something? Scared you're being put out of work by all this gay sex going on?
