World Renowned Explorer Don Walsh

Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh who piloted the 1960 U.S. Navy Trieste submarine nearly 7 miles to the deepest point on earth tells captivating story of courage, determination and discovery as he took a submarine where no one had dared to go before, almost 36,000 feet below sea level.

Trieste Experience
The famous 1960 Trieste dive represents a significant chapter in history. Over 60 dives were completed in preparation for the 1960 mission. During the nearly 9-hour journey, the Trieste was subjected to the most extreme conditions imaginable witnessing something the scientific community thought was impossible—marine life thriving in the total absence of light in an area known as the Mariana Trench.

Rolex Involvement
The “Deep Sea Special” Rolex model was strapped to the Trieste for the famous dive, descending nearly 7 miles to the deepest point on earth withstanding the most extreme conditions any watch has ever encountered—nearly 8 tons of pressure per square inch. The “Deep Sea Special” is a significant milestone in Rolex’s professional dive-watch history.

O.C. Tanner Exhibit

Known as THE source for Rolex watches in Utah, O.C. Tanner will be exhibiting the original “Deep Sea Special” Rolex at their downtown O.C. Tanner jewelry store October 28 – November 3. The exhibit, which is open to the public will also feature historic photos of the Trieste dive and other vintage watches dating all the way back to 1906.
