There are over 276,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing residents in Utah. Relay Utah has been provided by the Utah Public Service Commission since 1988 and has an equipment program where we loan out amplified, captioning and cell phones to individuals, including seniors, who are hard of hearing.
For those who are hard of hearing, amplified phones allow individuals to adjust the volume and tone, and it eliminates background noises to provide maximum reception and clarity. They offer a substantially higher quality of sound. They also come with hearing aid compatible handsets.
The amplified phone is called the AMPLI 455 It has the option of volume and tone changes, built in answering machine, caller ID and with the large buttons, this phone is perfect for individuals who are hard of hearing who may also have low vision.
The "CapTel" phone is a captioning phone that includes both an amplified headset and an adjustable text display screen that lets the user listen while reading a captioned version of what's said to them in their conversations. The combination of these two features makes it easier for individuals who are hard of hearing to stay connected over the phone and to understand numbers, names, and other words that are difficult to decipher due to their hearing loss.
Relay Utah also offers cell phones. Everyone can use a cell phone! This new Jitterbug is great for seniors because it's big buttons make it easy to use and even better, they won't be overwhelmed with features they don't use. It simply has "yes" or "no" command buttons. It even comes pre-programmed and ready to use right out of the box. This new model even has texting and can take photos! The best thing about it is that it has louder volume control than other cell phones. The sound quality is superior to most cell phones. It is hearing aid compatible.
And, most of the equipment is usually free! Individuals who qualify for Public Assistance or Medicaid benefits are eligible for Relay equipment at no charge. To apply, simply go to the RelayUtah.gov
