Face Shapes

When determining which style of frame looks best on you, look at three important areas: the forehead, cheeks and chin. These three features should complement each other. Be careful that frames do not repeat angular or round lines in the face.

Five Basic Shapes:

Oval: This is the desired face shape because the forehead, cheeks and chin are all in proportion and complement each other. Sunglasses should not extend larger than the width of the face.

Inverted Triangle or Sweetheart: The forehead is wider than the chin, therefore the chin needs to balance the forehead avoid any angular rimmed frames. The triangle is the opposite.

Round: Forehead and chin are balanced with no cheek definition. Do not buy round frames or oversized lenses. Large frames will make the face appear rounder.

Square: Forehead and chin are prominent and have angular lines. Be careful of thick heavy frames. Look for rounded features that will soften the chin and forehead.

Petite: Features are small and delicate. Scale of the frame is very important because most pairs of sunglasses will overwhelm the body and make face look very small. Choose thin frames and angular styles that will help to broaden the face.

Oblong: Forehead and chin are balanced in size but cheeks are narrow and the distance between the forehead and chin is long. Choose frames that are large and rounded or square to balance out the long cheek line.
