RECIPE:
Grandma Jalaine's Apple Roll
7-8 apples peeled & thinly sliced
4 cups water
¼ cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
2 2/3 cups flour
2½ tsp baking powder
2/3 cup milk
1 Tbsp sugar- for sprinkling
2 tsp cinnamon- for sprinkling
Preheat oven 350 degrees. Slice apples and set aside. For syrup mixture, place water, butter, sugar and cinnamon in a 2 quart sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Remove and set aside. In a medium mixing bowl mix shortening, salt, flour and baking powder together. Add the milk and stir with a fork to make a soft dough. Roll the dough out on a well floured piece of wax paper. Roll into a 9 x 15 rectangle. Sprinkle the dough with cinnamon and sugar. Spread the thin apple slices evenly over the top. Roll the dough into a log. Slice the roll into approximately 1 inch slices. Place each slice cut side down into a 9 x 13 inch square dish. Pour syrup mixture over it all. Bake 350 for 45 min
Top with vanilla ice cream or whip cream!
