An article Nicea found in the August issue of Men's Health Magazine focuses on a new diet study done by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania. The study suggests your food's appearance influences how much you eat.

The scientists argue that diners underestimate how much food they are serving themselves when foods come in more than one choice. It all comes down to portion control.

The study's author, Stephen Hoch, Ph.D, tells Men's Health Magazine that "variety creates the illusion that less food is available, which causes people to lose track of the total amount they eat.

Men's Health Weight-Loss Coach Alan Aragon suggests using your hand to guage portions.
  • One portion of pasta is as big as a tight fist.
  • One portion of chicken breast is as big as the palm of your hand and four of your fingers.
  • One portion of nuts should fit right in the palm of a cupped hand.
  • One portion of starchy vegetables is as big as a tight fist.
