Have you already failed your New Year’s resolution? 70 percent fail within the first week, however there may be an easy fix.

Utah Health & Wellness developer Marianne Pritchett, Mandy Johnson, NP, and Dr. Brett Luddington have advice to get us back on track.

Marianne worked in the medical and insurance world for twenty years and was frustrated with the typical bandage approach to treatment. She was experiencing a low energy workout and knew it had something to do with her thyroid but her physician kept telling her that she was at a low normal range. Marianne did research and is now taking a bio identical which has changed her life.

Bio identical hormones are identical, on a molecular level to what your body makes naturally. Utah Health and Wellness uses compounding pharmacies where they can better individualize medications for each patient. Rather than giving a pre-formulated tablet that is a set dosage, they can tailor the ingredients and dosages to be put into a capsule depending on the needs of the patient.

There are many symptoms of low thyroid function. Symptoms can include: fatigue, inability to lose weight, menstrual irregularities, weight gain, depression, and dry skin and nails. The American Thyroid Association estimates that 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease and up 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition. One in eight women will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. The normal range for thyroid is quite wide 0.45-4.5. Most providers check one test when testing thyroid function and many people can have a normal level and still have symptoms of low thyroid function. At this point it is a good idea to have a full thyroid panel done to see if other abnormalities are present.

Symptoms of low thyroid function

  • Inability to lose weight
  • Low libido
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Dry skin and hair

You can find out the range of your thyroid through blood and saliva testing. The other hormones Utah Health and Wellness tests for that can affect these symptoms are testosterone, progesterone and estrogen. There are many different symptoms for each of these hormones.

Symptoms of low testosterone levels
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Blunted motivation
  • Weight gain
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Decreased libido
  • Diminished feeling of well being
  • Symptoms of low estrogen levels
  • Hot flashes
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased libido
  • Foggy thinking
  • Headaches
Symptoms of low progesterone levels

  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Depression
  • Low libido
Another challenge we have with keeping up our resolutions is pain. If we are having too much pain to start or continue a program then it’s even more difficult to become more active. Dr. Luddington, can help reduce pain with a laser massage treatment program that reduces inflammation, speeds the healing process and greatly decreases pain felt by the patient. With laser massage treatment or other therapies they have in the clinic they will be able to help patients get back on track towards their New Year resolutions.
