The stars of Magic Mike talked with the hosts of Good Things Utah Tuesday. Magic Mike opened over last weekend at Number 2 at the box office, making $39.1 million.
Here are our questions... and the stars' answers.
Magic Mike has been doing very well in the box office, when you were filming did you guys have any idea?
Channing: Oh man, I mean, it's been such a blessing, literally every single step of the way, I mean just the fact that Steven Soderbergh, you know, really got behind this thing and was the driving force of you know really making it happen, uhm, down to every single person that we called first, uh, you know just jumped on and committed fully and you know, it's just been crazy and to have the reaction that we're getting from you know from all, from all the public you know from seeing the tv spots and what not, it's just been nuts.
Matthew: We shot it in what a month..
Channing: psht, less than that... 24 days...
Matthew: 24 day shoot... so uhm... we were together, it was, it was really, really a circus and um, we were circus performers, it was really fun, I mean it couldn't be more of a fun subject matter...
Channing: no...
Matthew: It was a ball
Channing: yeah, I think Steven said, Steven kinda said it perfectly, he was like, you really can't do anything wrong.
Matthew: you can't go wrong... yeah...
There seems to be a good chemistry in this cast, how much fun was it for all of you each day on the set?
Matthew: It was great camaraderie, it was, it was nothing but fun. I couldn't wait to come to work every single day, we stayed around, every guy stayed around for every other guys performance or dance, we all walked the preverbal plank as far as signing up for the is movie, all doing something we hadn't done before, besides Channing and uhm, I mean the least fun day was Sunday when we were off work.
Channing (agrees)
Matthew: The set for me was in the club Xquisite and so I just, I loved every area of that club. I loved on introducing my guys and for me, my guys has the gift of gab, quite a liver tongued guy who is a bit of a poet and quite a hard core capitalist (hard out)
Did it sometimes feel like you were just going clubbing everyday?
Channing: I don't know if clubbing was, was right, but you definitely felt this world, I mean, once you go in and you know you have 200 women in this room or 250 women at times and it's nerve racking, you know you gotta, you know as soon as they're about to pull that curtain back, you're getting ready to, you know, getting ready to bare all...
Matthew: but different than clubbing, because we were, it looks really fun and it is really fun, it looks effortless, but it wasn't effortless, uhm, we had to work really hard to put on performances
Channing: yeah
Matthew: and there's a difference. The performances needs to be, if it's fun for the performers great, but who really needs to be fun for is the women in the audience so they open up their purses and pay back some of those greenbacks to help us run our business. So it has to, it's a performance uhm, each night for us for sure.
How do you get ready for that? Who did you work with?
Matthew: We had great choreographers
Channing: Yeah
Matthew: Channing's friends, very talented
Channing: Allison Falk and Teresa Espinoza, thank you guys so much, 'cause they, they're some of the best choreographers in the business and they came and did a lot of different choreography than, that they've ever had to do before (laughs)
Matthew: (laughs) Yeah
Channing you had experience dancing, but Matthew was there any part of you that was nervous about dancing like that... without your clothes on?
Matthew: As soon as I got the call from the director, Steven Soderbergh who offered me the part and then said, you know I'd like you to, it would be great if Dallas has a dance at the end of the movie, I immediately, my blood pressure rose, gee, strippin' in a movie, I don't really need to strip, it's not even written in there, I don't need to strip, as soon as I got that far, the other side of me was going all ready going, are you kidding me, you have to strip, if you have a chance, you're never going to be in a stripper movie again, go out and do it, have a ball, it's scary, so that's why you gotta do it, so as soon as I got off the phone, 10 minutes after, I was in and, it's just about being committed and make a performance
So who has the best abs?
Matthew: Best abs... Joe is like
Channing: Joe is kinda like...
Matthew: he's like cryptonic
Channing: yeah, he's sorta like a freak of nature
Matthew: yeah he's like, his abs are like, each one is like the size of a loaf of bread...
Channing: laughs... thank you, thank you Gretchen.
