When most people think of crafts they think of doilies, toll painting and gingerbread houses but Craft Lake City is looking to change your mind!
That’s why 180 local artists are challenging the traditional definition of craft at this year’s Craft Lake City. Think monsters, dolls representing iconic figures, chain mail and clothing made from bullets for a start. Craft Lake City (CLC) is a free festival coming up on August 13 from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Gallivan Center. The event will feature food, beer, two entertainment stages for music and dance, kid’s activities, and most importantly: handmade craft. The event is free and open to the public.
“2011 brings our third annual Craft Lake City,” says Angela Brown, CLC director and SLUG Magazine’s editor and publisher. “Our alternative goods will redefine the meaning of the word craft for a lot of Utahns. In addition, with the Gallivan Center’s recent remodel, we now have room for two stages, 15 performing acts and seven different food and beer vendors.”
Affordably-priced items like silk-screened posters, reconstructed clothing, knitted items and jewelry will be available. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day and will include craft demonstrations, street performers and musical acts.
“If there are still people out there who think crafting is about painting wooden bunnies and geese, I would say, come to Craft Lake City and expand your definition of how hip felt applique and crochet can be. This ain't your mama's homemaking meeting,” says Rachel Hayes, CLC artist.
Music and dance will fill two stages at the newly remodelled Gallivan Center, making the craft fair a festival with something for almost anyone. Performers include The Mooks; The 3 2 1s; Muscle Hawk; It Foot, It Ears; Subrosa/S.L.F.M.; Dances With Wolves; Dark Seas; Kenshin Taiko; Birthquake!; Joshua Payne Orchestra; belly dance showcase including Blue Lotus, Hathor and the Lunar Collective; No Nation Orchestra; Rifamos; Red Bennies and Spell Talk.
A kid’s area will offer fun arts and crafts, like tissue paper flowers, and a bounce house from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Food vendors will include The Pie, Skewered Thai, Chili Verde and Sno Zone.
