Local comic book artists are coming together to help one of their own, and you can help too by having your picture drawn with your favorite comic book superhero!
Local writer of comic books animation series, Jake Black, is fighting cancer (Hodgkins Disease) and faces a $90,000 medical bill. Many Utahns in this field of work are "freelancers" and have no health insurance to help them through a devastating illness. Utah has a very growing number of comic book/animation artists and writers many of us don't know about. With the growing number of Hollywood movies being based on comic books, the industry is growing ... and most of these artists and writers can now work from home because of the internet, but they are all more or less freelance talent.
Jake Black is a writer with credits on Smallville, Ben 10: Alien Force, Chaotic and more. In comics he's worked on "Legion of Super-heroes" "TMNT" "Ender's Game" and more. He's written several books including stories featuring popular characters such as Batman, Superman, and the WWE. His next book, "The Authorized Ender Companion" (and encyclopedia of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series) hits stores in November 2009. Jake lives in a quiet Utah town with his wife and son.
Jake's friends and fellow artists Tyler Kirkham (Spider-Man, Transformers, Fantastic Four, Wolverine, X-Men) and Travis Walton (Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teen Titans, DC Comics.) and Chad Hardin (Spider-Man, DC Comics) are coming to his rescue to help cover some of his medical costs. They are holding a "sketchathon" where you can go and have your favorite comic book hero drawn for you... or have them draw you with your favorite comic book hero! Several comic book companies are also shipping collectible pieces and art to be sold or auctioned.
