Everyone experiences hair loss as they age. However, the type of hair loss may differ. Men usually experience a Apattern@ lossChence, the name Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). This type of hair loss is much more evident in comparison to other types of loss. Even without overt pattern loss we all experience thinning hair as we age.
It is important to note that if a disease is suspected (hair loss is not part of a family pattern, or the loss is sudden and severe) in causing the hair loss, a medical evaluation by a qualified doctor would help determine the cause. Proper treatment should then allow regrowth of most, if not all, of the lost hair.
It has been known for some time that women can experience an accelerated loss from unknown causes. It is now commonly referred to as Female Pattern Baldness (FPB). This can begin as early as the third decade of life. It is a thinning throughout the affected scalp without progressing to complete baldness.
Men with MPB usually retain enough Adonor hair@ on the sides and back of their scalp to transplant to balding areas. Recent progress in hair transplant technology has made it possible for women with FPB to experience successful surgical hair restoration. This allows the thinning areas to be permanently thickened.
If you believe you are a candidate for hair transplantation, the next step is to meet with a board certified physician to receive a personal assessment of your hair loss.
