The college football bowl season kicks off this Saturday with the New Mexico bowl. BYU will take on UTEP. Both teams are 6-6. Seriously, do they deserve to go to a bowl game?
BYU struggled to get to .500 for the year. UTEP lost 5 of its last 6 games. No wonder some people are saying this is the worst bowl game of the year. But there are plenty of others to choose from. There are just too many meaningless games now.
I understand the economics of the thing. I also get that its a big deal for recruiting and a reward for the players and the fans. But really, why should 6-6 teams go to a bowl game? Is that the reward for being average?
After you get past the BCS bowl games, and a couple of other big ones, what's the point? Neither team is ranked. Neither team is going to be ranked-win. lose or draw. This game has no impact on any standings or rankings or anything, really. Its just a chance to play one more game. I hope the fans enjoy it. It doesn't seem like a very big deal to me.
