There's no doubt that the Utah-BYU rivalry is one of the best in the country. And it seems to have gotten better over the last 6 years, since Kyle Whittingham and Bronco Mendenhall have taken over as head coaches. In their 6 meetings, 5 of the games have gone down to the final play. Who can ask for more than that?!?
This year's game has a different feel to it. Its being played much earlier, and the 2 teams are not in the same conference, so no titles or bowl games are at stake. But it's still a big game, one that fans look forward to all year long. Let's hope this one is a good one that goes right down to the wire.
The teams have agreed to keep playing for at least thru 2012. After that, they'll re-evaluate things. I hate to say it, but I could see this game going away, or maybe being played every 2nd or 3rd year. With Utah's move to the PAC-12, those games will start to overshadow this one, and there may be years where neither team could find an opening to accommadate the other. I hope it doesn't happen, but I feel like it could.
So let's enjoy it while it lasts! September or November, its still one of the great rivalries in the nation. Let's get ready to rumble!!!
