This year's Utah State football team did what no other Aggies team had ever done. They won 10 games. They won the WAC outright. They even cracked the top 25 in the BCS rankings. It was an awesome year.
The down side of all of that success is that head coach Gary Andersen is now going to be mentioned every time there's a coaching vacancy. It's already happened twice, and the season isn't even over yet. Both Cal and Colorado fired their coaches, and Andersen's name was brought up as a possible replacement.
Coach Andersen is a class guy. He is saying all the right things, that he is only worried about winning a bowl game and finishing this year off on a great note.
But I'm sure it's a distraction for him. And for the school, the players, and the fans. I hope he can weather the storm and keep things focused on the upcoming bowl game.
If the right situation came along, I assume he would go. And if that's the case, I would wish him the very best. Everyone deserves a chance to further his career and see how good he can really be. I'm not sure either Cal or Colorado would be the right situation. That's not for me to decide. But right now, it feels right to have him in Logan, where he has turned the Aggies into winners.
