My daughter went on her first date. She's fifteen and was invited to a school homecoming dance at Juan Diego High. Of course I had no say in the matter being outvoted 2-1 by my wife and daughter. Our dog Sir Charles stayed out of it. But it was a weird moment in my life. What happened to that three year old, four year old toddler that was at my side when I returned home from work at night. At seven she and I were playing catch outside. At eight we went to movies together. Now at fifteen I'm being brushed aside for some other man (actually he's only 15) With my knowledge of the court systems and police records I thought maybe I could do a background check. After all you got to protect your daughter right? I came to my senses and trusted her judgement. But in the end, she left with her mother. For some reason she didn't want me around when all the couples were gathering at a friend's home. Was I going to scowl at him, take him to the other room and threaten to cut his fingers? ... the thought entered my mind. I stayed home with my dog instead. At least he still finds time for me. I know my daughter's safe. I trust her very much. But I sure miss playing catch in the backyard.
