I recently went to Sunrise Elementary School to talk to 2nd graders about Hurricane Earl and several other topics. I laughed and I was amazed.
I asked one little girl about getting schools more money. She answered by saying, "I think you should donate to schools as much as you can, but if your dad is out of work you don't want to go broke because your donating to a school." And she wasn't done. With the microphone in front of her mouth she continued. "You should give as much as you can possibly. It doesn't really matter if its a big amount because every little bit counts, even a penny." Wow. I thought to myself, 'did I even know how to read in second grade?'
When I asked the students how much they would pay their teacher the answers were all over the place. $5, $10, $20, $30 were some of the answers. Then there were the more specific ones - like $36, $37 and $56.
I also asked them about eating unhealthy foods. Its amazing that they know what is unhealthy and healthy and they also are quick to admit they love eating a lot of "chocolate", "cupcakes", "cookies" and "brownies." I guess some things never change.
