What happened to Halloween? Back in my day, (insert old man joke here) Halloween ranked high on the holiday list. I mean come on, dressing up, staying up late, free candy! What’s not to like? Yet it seems today, Halloween gets a bad rap. I don’t know when it happened or how it happened but the parties and costume parades I remember as a kid are virtually non-existent in schools today.
I’ve done a little research and what I’ve found is there are a number of explanations as to where Halloween originates. You can find a story to fit just about any belief you have on Halloween..
For me Halloween is very simple. You carve a pumpkin, you dress up and walk around with family and friends begging for candy. It all seems pretty harmless doesn’t it? Not exactly, I know there are many who believe Halloween celebrates paganism or the occult.
I have to respectfully disagree. I attend church every Sunday and for me, carving a pumpkin, dressing up my boys as Spiderman or a Cowboy and sending them out to ask for candy doesn’t contradict what I read in the Bible. In fairness, our entire family will look like a bunch of heathens going through the candy when we get home tonight, “HEY, YOU’RE EATING ALL THE TWIX!”
What other time during the year is it perfectly legit to dress up as your favorite character, athlete or newsmaker? I love going to costume parties and seeing creativity in action. Today at work a co-worker walks in dressed as another co-worker and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard.
Different opinions are what make American great. I only hope dressing up in costumes and begging for candy doesn’t get bowled over by too much political correctness.
Happy Halloween, thanks for reading and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and on Facebook.
