Fire up the grill, break out the bathing suits because summer is officially here! Sure it's already hit 98 degrees in Salt Lake City and topped 100 in St. George but today it's REALLY summer!
Today at 5:09 in the afternoon is the summer solstice. What is the summer solstice? I'm glad you asked, the summer solstice is the time of year when the earth's northern hemisphere is at it's maximum tilt towards the sun. The direct rays of the sun are over the Tropic of Cancer, it's northern most point of the year.
Today is also the day you'll hear people say is our "longest day of the year." Now if you want to be "that guy" or "that girl" calling out inaccuracies you should clarify that all days are 24 hours long, no one is longer or shorter than the other. What's longer today is the number of minutes of daylight. The arctic circle will experience 24 hours of daylight today and the south pole, 24 hours of darkness.
To me, what's most depressing about the day is that from here on out we'll lose daylight. We'll continue to lose daylight until the winter solstice this December when the process starts all over again.
