Do you feel rested and refreshed after this past weekend? You should, it was a long weekend...well, sort of. We actually got an extra second added to Sunday, June 30th. Did you notice that Sunday was 24 hours and 1 second long?
The "leap second" as it's known, was added to the world's atomic clock at midnight on Saturday. It's done to account for the Earth's slowing rotation. Scientists say days are actually 2 milliseconds longer than they were 100 years ago. Over time this short amount of time will add up to the point it becomes obvious. Sunrise could occur at sunset and winter could occur in spring!
Thankfully we don't have to worry about any of this because we're all synched up to the second...thanks to a "leap second!"
