Here we go again.
More conference shakeup talk. Although, as of right now, it sounds like the only conference people are talking about when it comes to expansion or change is the Big 12.
This all started with Texas A&M informing the Big 12 of its intentions of "exploring options." Really, Texas A&M? You can't be serious. You think the SEC is a better option for you? Think again. At best, you're a middle of the pack SEC team.
Anyway, when this all popped up this week, speculation started flying about what this could mean for BYU.
The Cougars' season kicks off at Ole Miss on Saturday and here we are guessing as to what BYU will do if its invited to the Big 12. Let's say the Aggies do leave the conference, then what? Well, from what I've read the Big 12 would go after Notre Dame, Arkansas and BYU....and in that order. So the Cougars are NOT the first choice of the Big 12.
I think there's a better chance the Cougars join the conference if the Big 12 decides to add three teams to make it a 12-team league (once again, that's if A&M takes off).
Does any of this sound crazy to you?
BYU just entered independence and struck gold with an ESPN TV deal. Then you take into play the other teams in the West Coast Conference. Leaving independence and the WCC in the near future would make for a messy situation for BYU.
Who knows how soon a move could be made. Who knows if all this is even possible?
I think the Cougars are in a good position. Build success with what you have now and make a move to a BCS conference later down the road. No need to hurry anything. Seriously. Who knows, maybe BYU ends up really liking the independence route.
Don't get me wrong, the Big 12 would be a great move but everyone needs to pump the brakes right now. Let's see how independence pans out.
