I don't know why I am a Celtics fan, but I am. And as long as I can remember I have been. I grew up in the Seattle area and we had the Sonics - then again they were the Sonics of the early 1970s - so, maybe that explains it.
Getting back to the point - the Celtics have always been my NBA team. From Hondo Havlicek to Larry Bird to Garnett and Rondo - I have always followed the boys in green. I must admit, I became a two fan team in the late 70's as the Sonics became a great team and even took home a championship against the Bullets. So, for several years and several players, Gus Williams, Downtown Freddie Brown, Jack Sikma, DJ, Shawn Kemp (the slender version) to name a few - I followed the Sonics as well.
Fast forward and the Sonic love affair is over - and now of course I am bitter about the whole Oklahoma Thunder thing. But I still have my Celtics. Sure they left the Garden and sure there were some real lean years there, between Bird and Pierce and the more recent version of the Celtics, but a fan I remained.
Overtime I grew tired of the NBA altogether and became a big college basketball fan. But the one pro basketball team I still follow still watched and still cheered for - The Celtics.
Hondo, who has been a constant figure on my desk now for 20 years could tell you more - but he's busy playing Celtic basketball - ball in his left hand and drippling hard. Showtime is fine and Kobe, well, he is great, but Boston Basketball - to me -has always been about grit, muscle, effort and of course winning.
Go Rondo! Go Celtics!
