With the Utah and BYU football teams dominating the headlines these days, and the Jazz about to tip off what should be a very promising season, it's easy to forget just how good Real Salt Lake has been.
Consider this -- since they lost to Columbus way back in April 24th, Real has gone 14-1-9. That's just one MLS loss in almost six months. Not to mention the fact that RSL has also played very well in the CONCACAF Champions League, qualifying for the elimination round in February.
Real has been invincible at home, not losing an MLS game at Rio Tinto Stadium since May of 2009. RSL is the highest scoring team in the league with 43 goals, and have given up the fewest with 18. They even avenged their only loss over this incredible stretch when they beat FC Dallas Saturday night, 2-0.
But perhaps the best thing about Real Salt Lake is the fact that they don't have a true superstar. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando is tied for the MLS lead in goals allowed, but outside of that, they don't have any player among the top five in the league in any statistic. 13 different players have scored goals for RSL this season.
It's hard to believe Real could improve upon last year's run to the MLS Cup. But this year's team is even better, and with the playoffs a little over a week away, we could be witnessing another magical run to another championship.
